Small business microgrant winners announced in Oakland County

This year there were six winners of the Spirit of Main Street Micro Business Start-Up Grant, each of them located within communities of the Main Street Oakland County program. These microgrants are awarded by Main Street Oakland County and Genysis Credit Union.

Oakland County has many activities for senior citizens that go far beyond potluck meals and exercise classes. Here are some enriching programs across the county.

Casual Day

County employees give nearly $50k to worthy recipients

Oakland County employees donated $49,000 to support local charities this year through the county’s Casual Day program, County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said during a special ceremony at the Oakland County Executive Office Building Conference Center in Waterford. On Casual Day, employees in participating departments and divisions donate $1 to wear jeans to work.

All aboard the Royal Park Express!

Once again, the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester has transformed their lobby into a Christmas wonderland with a massive, whimsical gingerbread creation—the Royal Park Express, a gingerbread train on candy cane tracks.

Lakeshore Legal Aid provides free legal services for people in need

Lakeshore Legal Aid provides free legal services to low-income people in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties, and specializes in senior work, domestic violence work, family law, housing work, consumer protection, and eviction protection.

Sled hockey brings "the coolest game on Earth" to disabled athletes around the world. At the third annual Oakland Edge adult hockey tournament held at Rochester's Onyx Ice Arena, visitors witnessed a sled hockey showdown between London, Canada's Blizzard hockey club and Metro Detroit's very own Michigan Sled Dogs.
